The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Municipal Government of Simunul have strengthened their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Birth Registration Assistance Project (BRAP) during a courtesy visit on August 7, 2024.

This partnership underscores PSA’s continued commitment to ensuring that every Filipino, especially those in marginalized and geographically isolated communities, has access to timely and free birth registration services. The BRAP aims to eliminate barriers to civil registration, particularly among Indigenous Peoples and disadvantaged sectors, thereby promoting the right to identity and access to basic social services.

The MOA signing was attended by PSA officials from various regions and provinces, led by OIC Regional Director Engr. Akan G. Tula of PSA RSSO BARMM Also present were Masil Mohammadsha Chief Statistical Specialist of PSA Tawi-Tawi,  Engr. Medzhor A. Tan Chief Statistical Specialist of PSA Sulu, Mahmur Sarail Chief Statistical Specialist of PSA Basilan, Hasnah Muyco Statistical Specialist II of PSA Region XII, Nidzpar Rasid Registration Officer I of PSA Tawi-Tawi, Firdaus Abdullah Statistical Analyst of  PSA BARMM.  

The team was warmly welcomed by Hon. Mohammad Yusof Tidal, Mayor of Simunul, along with members of the municipal council and other local officials. OIC Regional Director Engr. Akan G. Tula highlighted the importance of the MOA, stating that it is a crucial step towards achieving universal civil registration in BARMM. Chief Statistical Specialist Masil Mohammadsha emphasized that the agreement will help address under-registration in the municipality, saying, “Through this partnership, we can reach more unregistered individuals and give them the legal identity they deserve.”

Mayor Tidal expressed his full support for the project, assuring that the LGU will work hand in hand with PSA to ensure its smooth and successful implementation in the municipality. The signing marks a significant step in realizing the shared vision of PSA and the Local Government Unit of Simunul, a community where every birth is registered, and every citizen has access to the rights and services they are entitled to.
